Half a dozen temporary glacier lakes have formed in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh and are posing a serious threat to the population living downstream.

Lahaul and Spiti MLA Ravi Thakur led team, who had gone to inspect huts being constructed by the forest department for the facility of pilgrims and tourists visiting Neelkanth Lake in Nainghar, found that fast melting glaciers have formed around big six-eight glacial lakes on the trek leading to Neelkanth Lake.

To prepare for the unforeseen disaster from these temporary glacier lakes, Ravi Thakur has demanded for through study of its potential from geologists and experts.

As per report, the Himachal Pradesh has over 200 glacial lakes, of which dozen have been identified as having high potential for breach and can swept anything which will come on its way.
