Himachal’s hydel power generation added another feather in its cap as its largest Nathpa Jhakri project in Kinnaur generated 7,140 million units against the target production of 6,700 million units in 2010-11, as declared by the Deputy General Manager of the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL) Vijay Verma. Nathpa Jhakri project has a capacity of 1,500 MW. It’s operated by the SJVNL that is a joint venture between the central government and the Himachal government.

Its second hydropower project – 412 MW Rampur hydroelectric projects will start generation from early 2013. Nathpa Jhakri project is feeding the need of nine northern states that generates about 38 million units daily and with its Rampur unit it will offer more power to the nation that will help to feed the shortage of power in many states like Punjab Rajasthan, UP and NCR.
