State government has ordered probe into the Shimla Municipal Corporation’s decision to clear about 96 maps for new and old buildings, which was taken in the Single Umbrella Committee on 18th Dec 2012, just two days before the state Assembly poll results.

The Single Umbrella Committee decision had surprised everyone as a few of these are in the banned core area of the town. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, after receiving detailed complaint on the issue, had directed Chief Secretary Sudripta Roy to hold an inquiry and submit a report on it.

It is learned that said the maps were cleared in undue haste while the model code of conduct was in place and the beneficiaries allegedly included certain influential people and three leading mobile service operators – whose mobile towers were cleared with doing spot verifications. Even MC Shimla Mayor Sanjay chauhan has also raised objections on the clearance of the maps of these buildings in one go during the Single Umbrella Committee meeting.

It is also learned that the government may entrust these cases to the State Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau.
