To amplify its reach among the people of Shimla city, Municipal Corporation (MC) is working on the concept of community radio. This would help the MC to disseminate information regarding water, electricity, road repairs, traffic diversion, parking, weather forecast and snow alerts easily amongst the people.
Community radio could be the most effective and cheapest mode of communication with residents and it could also help cash strapped Shimla MC to reach to the people of Shimla. It is learned that the proposal is being conceptualised with the help of a consultant and it will need Rs 30 lakh and after getting necessary nod of the House, MC will approach the Union Ministry of Urban Development under the information and education campaign for required funds.
Deputy Mayor Tikender Panwar said that community radio will be effective mode of dissemination of necessary information to the residents of Shimla City. Community radio can facilitate two-way communication as people can register complaints, air grievances and give suggestions for improving services through the channel, he added.
MC Commissioner Amarjeet Singh confirmed the development of launching a community radio and stated that it will not only help the people of Shimla but tourists as well.
