Zila Parishad Kullu has been awarded Rajeev Gandhi Empowerment National Award for its outstanding contribution in strengthening the Panchayati Raj System.

Union Panchayati Raj Minister V. Kishore Chander Dev presented the Award to Zila Parishad Kullu Chairman Hari Chand Sharma at New Delhi today on the occasion of National Panchayat Day. The Award consists of Rs. 40 lakh and Citation.

Zila Parishad Kullu has spent 25 percent of its total budget for constructing public toilets to make the district open defecation free.

Detailing about various activities of Zila Parishad, Hari Chand Sharma said that all the members of Zila Parishad had launched awareness programme about the importance of sanitation and plantation to keep the environment pollution free. He said that annual plan was being formulated year by year by Zila Parishad.

He said that Zila Parishad had approved 117 drinking water schemes during the year 2011-12. Parishad had been organising various activities with cooperation of Yuvak and Mahila Mandals and priority had been given to the matters relating to child education, women and scheduled castes.
